Hello Lovelies! Let’s talk Himalayan Salt Lamps.
Himalayan Salt (aka Himalayan Pink Salt) Lamps and bowls and their beneficial health properties, like being used in the home to purify the air, are quickly rising in popularity. You can find them in most health stores and there are tons of articles on the web about the science behind how these lamps work.
Today, I want to talk to you about the benefits of having one of these lamps in your kiddies bedroom or nursery. Using a Himalayan salt lamp as a night light in your child’s room is a wonderful and natural way to relieve a number of health issues and promote restful sleep.
If you’ve ever seen one of these lamps switched on you would have seen the soft orange glow that it creates, pretty similar to that of a smoldering fire. And, if you’re familiar with colour therapy, you’ll know that different colours and colours of light have various effects on the body. Unfortunately, many modern light sources like cell phones, tablets, computers and TVs emit a lot of blue light. Blue light (or wavelengths), which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood, can be a little disruptive at night. Many of us (especially our kiddies) spend a lot of time staring at these blue-light-emitting devices, especially in the evening. Apple has recently introduced their “Night Shift Mode”, which converts your screen to an orange light, in efforts to combat this problem. You can read more about blue light (or wavelengths) here.
Salt lamps, on the other hand, offer a warm orange-red glow, similar to the hues found in a campfire or by candlelight. For this reason, they are a great light source for the evening and can even be used as a night light without negatively affecting sleep.
If you do have a little one who is afraid of the dark, a salt lamp is a great option as the mellow and relaxing glow won’t keep your child awake, in fact, the lamp creates a peaceful, relaxing and calming environment assisting your little one to fall asleep quicker. And should your little one wake up in the middle of the night, the light isn’t harsh on the eyes or overly stimulating so that falling back asleep becomes a struggle.
If you have a new baby, the soft glow from salt lamps offer enough light that you are able to navigate the room during the night without disturbing baby, or completely stimulating baby during nighttime feeds.
Allergies and Sensitive children
Depending on the size of the room it’s kept in, salt lamps are a spectacular source of negative ions. Due to their hygroscopic properties, they improve the air in rooms by removing molecules of dirt, dust, and pollen particles. In addition to this, the lamp will clear the room of electrosmog, reduce humidity and prevent dust mites. This is particularly helpful for children who suffer from asthma or congestion and will significantly improve your child’s overall lung health.
With its anti-humidity properties, a salt lamp in your child’s bedroom can also aid in relieving uncomfortable skin conditions, like eczema, cradle cap and psoriasis, and common childhood illnesses. like chickenpox, measles, and shingles.
Studies have shown that electromagnetic radiation in the home (and at school and work) can cause stress and fatigue, as well as activating negative emotions. This can often result in bad moods, irritability, whining, crying and temper tantrums, which can be particularly difficult for children (and parents) who don’t understand why they are feeling that way. Himalayan salt lamps assits with combating these moods as they provide a clean, calm and fresh environment, lifting your littles one’s mood and leaving them feeling safe, calm and happy.
Himalayan Salt Lamps have also been known to assist in boosting mood and energy levels, especially useful for those who struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The soft orange hues are one of the soothing colours often used to calm mood and increase focus.
There are many, many more health benefits that bringing one of these lamps into your, and your childrens’, space can have.
